Businesses to Serve You
Busy + ness, 'serious occupation or work, as opposed to recreation or pleasure' (15th c.)
Which companies might I be dealing with?
In Halifax (without Dartmouth, Bedford, etc.) there are 14 active funerary businesses: 4 funeral homes, 2 crematoria, and 8 cemeteries. Most of the funeral homes and crematoria are owned by two corporations, while most of the cemeteries are owned by religious organizations.

Like funeral homes and crematoria, cemeteries are businesses that sell services and charge fees. You purchase perpetual burial rights to a cemetery plot. At the time of purchase, you also pay a perpetual care fee that goes into a fund from which the owner pays for ongoing cemetery maintenance. Like any business, a cemetery can be bought and sold. If the owner wishes to abandon a cemetery, the municipal government may agree to acquire it.

Unlike funeral homes and crematoria, however, cemeteries are not just businesses, but also perpetual abodes for ancestors, emotional abodes for descendants, and landscapes for the rest of us to ponder.
